Pig farming in the world agricultural and food trade system: challenges and prospects for the Russian Federation
Abstract and keywords
Abstract:
This article examines long-term trends in the global pork market in the context of the transformation of the agro-industrial complex and international food trade. The analysis covers the period from 1960 to 2023 and includes an assessment of the dynamics of pork production, export, and import, as well as the changing roles of individual countries and regions in the global supply chain. Particular attention is paid to key producing and exporting countries, such as China, the European Union, the United States, and Brazil, and the evolution of the Russian Federation's position in the global market is also analyzed. The paper demonstrates that the global pork market is characterized by steady production growth and high sensitivity to epizootic risks, changes in trade policy, and fluctuations in consumer demand. The reasons for the redistribution of export and import flows are revealed, related to technological modernization, regionalization of production, population growth, and changing dietary patterns. A separate section of the study is devoted to an analysis of consumer behavior and import dynamics in leading importing countries. The obtained results allow us to identify key factors in the competitiveness of national pig farming industries and determine the prospects for further development of the global pork market in the context of global economic instability.
